The Village School owns SPC

The Village School boys basketball team has no intention of competing in the Southwest Preparatory Conference. However, the Vikings, currently competing as an independent, may want to reconsider.

To date, The Village School has won three of four games against SPC schools. After splitting a pair of games against Episcopal and beating St. John's, the Vikings recently edged Kinkaid 72-70 to run their season record to 7-5.

"We've beaten some good teams," said The Village School head coach Don Harvey, noting that the Vikings also have a win over St. Pius. "At the same time, we've lost a few games we could have won. We've been all over the place. We need to be more consistent."

Against Kinkaid, junior wing Trey Williams poured in a season-high 34 points. Junior wing Gary Smith added 13 points, while junior post Shaquille Cleare had a double double (17 points, 14 rebounds).

The Vikings' next test is a road game at Kipp Academy at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Cinco Ranch @ Westside High School Where The Wolves Took Over In The 4th Quarter

It was all Cinco early in the half to the mid 3rd quarter, then it was Westside's defense that got the wolves back into the game and the cougars just can't run their offense. Cinco turn the ball over a couple of times which led to the wolves easy basket. Westside went to hang on to the lead and never look back. See highlights below:

Court part of Village School's growth

Basketball is just part of the plan to put The Village School on the map.

So far, the Vikings are doing their part to raise the college prep school's profile.

A year ago, the Village School's boys basketball team posted a winning record (14-8), and head coach Don Harvey believes it's only the beginning.

"We don't have any seniors. We're a junior-laden team," Harvey said. "We're improving, but we still have a long way to go."

To hasten the maturation process, Harvey beefed up the schedule. The Village School already has participated in the University of St. Thomas' Charlie Thomas Classic and the St. Thomas Basketball Classic. The Vikings also plan to enter the Houston Jamboree and the Houston ISD Tournament.

"In the past, we've played mostly small private schools, but we're taking on the bigger ones, including a few public schools," Harvey said.

Harvey is seeking exposure for several of his players, including a few who are considered top college prospects.

The biggest star — literally and figuratively - is junior center Shaquille Cleare. Like his namesake NBA great Shaquille O'Neal, Cleare is huge - 6-foot-9 and 280 pounds, to be exact - but he's surprisingly mobile.

"A lot of big guys don't have great skills, but Shaquille is the exception," Harvey said of Cleare. "He's dominant in the low post, but he can the dribble the ball, shoot and play defense. He moves well for his size."

How High Can She Reach?

How far can the senior Kellie Pressler take the St Agnes tigers this season? After the departure of Chelsea Bass (Texas) and Lauren Kleczynski, It is now the time for lady tigers post Pressler to pull her team together. She will need all the help to match up with the ever growing rival Westbury Christian who have loaded a bunch of talents this year. Wildcats newcomers are junior guard Sylvana Okde 5A tranfer from Dulles Ft Bend and freshman wing Briana Turner. Pressler will surely get her numbers up, but it's all up to her teammates to get theirs. St Agnes tigers will open up their season away on November 9th against College Park.

HCYA Boys Going For It's 5th Title In The 2010 Charlie Thomas Basketball Classic

In the picture, 2014 Justin Jackson long, quick and agile at 6 feet 5 can definitely shoot the lights out from deep three and mid-range floaters makes it hard to defend the wing. Jackson only a freshman who still have a lot of growing to do will surely turn some college coaches head for the next three coming years. He can handle the ball well, attack the rim at will and a slasher from the paint and jump over defender for an easy lay or follow to the basket. HCYA who had claimed four Charlie Thomas titles including last year will be on the run for another one for 2010. HCYA also have two scrappy sophomore point guards that can take turns running the floor on Edward Chung and TJ Rhodes. Both can direct, balance and see the floor well creating easy target passes to the hoops. An exciting team to watch this season well coached by Ed Chung assisted by Bob Baldwin and Karl Rhodes. Catch them for a game, for it's a definite treat for a basketball fanatics. Coming soon highlights from St. Thomas, Village High School and HCYA games.

A Dynasty Of It's Own... REWIND

Four years ago we have a DYNASTY in the making about to rise in Houston girls youth basketball. Houston Angels Select 12U has all it needed to become a legitimate contender in the nation with all the ingredients just waiting to get into the mix. To this day I still have to ask myself "What Happened?" Sometimes we simply just lose focus on our main goal and get destructed by other things which is not really that important. The ideal thing I would have done at the time was to keep all the girls together and work on developing and letting them grow into the sport that they truly love while having fun doing it. Back then most of the girls were all in middle school and a few were still in grade school. I saw and really enjoyed watching all of them transformed into young lovely ladies, but with a pizzas of great basketball talent. You can now catch all of them still bouncing the ball in the hardwood at their respective high school gyms. Listed are the names, graduation year and school they are currently attending. Standing at the back row from left to right are: Tyler Gilbert 2012 Hightower, Briana Williams 2013 St Johns, Blayke Hemmitt 2012 Bellaire, Bianca Winslow 2012 Bellaire, Shauna Espozio 2012 Friendswood, Jazmyn Howard 2012 Elkins and Taylor Gilbert 2012 Hightower. Seated Aaliyah Brown 2012 Clear Springs, Hannah Cambel 2014 Village, Victoria Trevino 2012 Friendswood, Sylvana Okde 2012 Westbury Christian, Kaylan Sanders 2012 Elkins, Atallah McKinney 2014 Bellaire and Raven Burns 2012 Bellaire. The Village High School Lady Vikings Visits Houston Christian Lady Mustangs

Village high school opened up their season away and lost their first game to the Lady Mustangs. Houston Christian lead by double digit from the start and never lost it's momentum. Lady vikings tried to close the gap by 8 points in the early 3rd quarter but cannot get any closer despite Cambel's effort scoring 20 points, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds, village just do not have enough firepower and legs to sustain the charging mustangs coming up short. Vikings led by three freshmen Cambel, Thompson and Onigbanjo combined for 37 with Thompson tabbing 9 points and Onigbanjo adding 8 points and claimed 6 rebounds. Mustangs high scorers are Madison Sheehy with 14 followed by Morgan Malouf with 12 buckets. See game highlights by clicking the link below:
