Hemmitt Helps The Lady Eagles JV Survive The Friendswood Mustangs

Blayke Hemmitt (2012) scrambled and goes down the floor to fight for a loose ball against Kessler Hurd (2013) Friday night at home when the Friendswood Lady Mustangs visited Pearland Dawson High School. Hemmitt played solid in the last 3 minutes of the ball game hitting a long 3 at the corner to help the eagles regain the lead. She stepped up her defense grabbing a couple of rebounds and a great put back for another two points with less than a minute to seal the win. Hemmitt’s future is bright and looking for her to mature and fully develop her overall game this summer with the Houston Angels.

Friendswood Lady Mustangs Varsity

Freshman Jill Bergeson (2013) of Friendswood High School starts for the Lady Mustangs. She’s long and stands about 6 feet can rebound bring the ball up and down the court, a great shooter and very aggressive young player on the floor. Bergeson is a superb wing who's also a great volleyball player that will bring another three years of great of basketball for Coach Kirby Killlingsworth. She averges about 10 points per game. The Lady Mustangs are well coached and work their offenses skillfully, but they can also run and gun with the direction of their witty senior point guard Annalisa Hall that will be featured soon with their junior post Kellsey Kaufhold two of the leading scorer for the Lady Mustangs both averaging 15 points per game. The stangs are 21-3 and 8-2 district.

Big Bri Got Bigger On The Floor

Briana Morgan Williams (2013) is making noise for St. Johns Mavericks. I have known her from when she was 9 years old and I knew from then that she will make her name in basketball. Wearing the Houston Jaguars Elite uniform at her young age and learning how to dribble and shoot was fond to remember. She was once coached by Moses Ellis of Team NCI that became Houston Angels under the direction of Coach Anthony Hemmitt were it became more of a passion to be a true winner. Williams stands about 5’11” with a great basketball framed body is a threat in the middle. A great rebounder and defensive player that any coach would want for their team. One thing that separates her from others is her basketball IQ. She can pass and dribbles like a guard. Quick and stable feet with soft hands to the basket. “Briana is a physical player who is adjusting to the speed of the varsity level,” Coach Pat Krieger said. The Mavericks will be playing at home against their rival Kinkaid School on the 29th of January game time 5:30pm.

They Came-They Played-They Conquered!

8th grade team grooming for high school basketball under Coach Margo Graham’s direction. The Village School Lady Vikings made a U-Turn from last year seasons record. They won every home and away games winning the last one against Second Baptist Thursday January 28th by 11 points. Winning this game in front of their home crowd ended their regular season with a 19-0 overall and 10-0 conference and made the Lady Vikings seeded number ONE in the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference tournament coming first week of February. They play home Monday, February 1st the opponent soon to be announced. They are 3 games away for claiming the HJP Conference Basketball Tournamnet Championship. The same Lady Vikings that claimed the 2009 Fall HJPC Volleyball crown. The Village School is stepping up their sports program in line with their known academic excellence.

Tay Schippers hit the last 4 pts. to beat Westbury Christian

“We just wanted it so bad and we were the team that fought the hardest,” Schippers said after the game. Lady Crusaders finally got over the hump after a decade. Concordia Lutheran inked a historic comeback victory at home in front of their home crowd. They will meet the Lady Wildcats again in the district tournament which will begin Tuesday. Westbury's Amber Orrange tabs double double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

The Village School Down St. Pius X 63-38

Vikings outplayed St. Pius X at home last night by winning with a great margin. Trey Williams led the team with 17 points; Chris Matthews added 16 points while Shaq led on rebounds and added 10 points. It was a great game for Coach Don Harvey’s young team leading in all four quarters of the game. Box scores shows 1st Qtr. 12-9, 2nd Qtr. 12-8, 3rd Qtr. 17-7 and 4th Qtr. 22-14 with the Village outscoring St. Pius and going on to win by 25 points margin. This set the pace as the season winds down and all the hard work are paying off. Left on the Village Vikings January schedules are home game against Beaumont Kelly January 26th 7pm and away at KIPP Academy January 28th 7pm. February starts with an away game vs. Christian Life on the 2nd 7pm followed by two home games with CHSA on the 9th 7pm and HCYA on the 12th 7pm. The 2009-2010 season ends with a tournament at Texas Christian University which will be their 2nd year in attendance.

Houston Hoops 2010 MLK Dream Classic-The Hoops presented another Class of 2014’s preview in their MLK Dream Classic tournament this past weekend at Plummer Middle School located on the north side of Houston. CAS Panthers from New York came down to play and brought home the championship. Other teams are San Antonio’s Finest now known as (Cy Fair Nike Elite-Caldwell), TKO Lady Dawgs Select from La Porte, Cy Fair Nike Elite-Coleman and their own Houston Hoops 2014. Shaq Rattles The Rim At Home

Shaquille Cleare of The Village High School finally decided to rattle the rim in front of the home crowd Wednesday night. I asked him more than twice why he never dunks and he just smiled and say I don't need to, but Wednesday night I saw a different Shaquille. He became very aggressive and showed everyone how he can really dominate in the middle if needed. He's a very humble young man with a lot of potential. Coach Harvey is taking his time and continuosly working to bring out the best of his very young team and with the way everything is turning out this year, I believe the Vikings will be ready to compete with any team next year. The maturity of each players are now visible. Having everyone healthy is a big plus compared to their last year season when most of the games the Vikings will only have 5-6 players playing due to injuries. The future is looking bright for The Village School and the Vikings.

They’ve known her as “LIL JAZ”

Jazmin Guerrero was known to her basketball buddies as “LIL JAZ”, but she was always a BIG contributor in any teams she’s on. From the Houston Jaguars Elite, Team NCI Elite and Coast 2 Coast just to name a few AAU teams that benefited from her talent and skills. Today any team and coaches would want to have her as part of their team. Another very skilled guard of Houston’s year 2012 and currently plays for Pasadena Dobie High School under the direction of Coach Shane Brown. Dobie have had a list of alumni that are now playing at the next level and one that always come to my mind was Karima Christmas who was signed by Duke University.

“Lil Jaz” now the top scorer for Dobie averaging over 14 points per game. A great jump shooter and can see the floor very well. She’s fun to watch and a very approachable young lady. I remember her vividly when her uncle Charles brought her to attend a basketball camp in Tennessee and taking pictures with Coach Pat Summitt and Candace Parker a few years back. Great job “Lil Jaz” keep it up!

Tyler Gilbert Named Athlete Of The Week

Tyler Gilbert, Hightower

Twin sister of Taylor Gilbert, daughters of proud parents Rodney & April Gilbert. The twins known as the "TWIN TOWERS" will be a force for the Hightower Hurricanes for the coming 2 years. Watch out for the "Canes Twin" because they are sure to come and cause damages to your home court.

Houston Is Full Of Guards

If you are looking for playmakers and chaos creators at the guard position, Aaliyah Brown from South of Houston, Texas. A player who seem to be everywhere on the court as described by Hoopgurlz. From the off-guard position, the 5’7” Brown does a great job of penetrating the heart of the defense and drawing attention, so she can deliver a pass or score herself. On defense, she is always active creating her share of turnovers and is an excellent on-ball defender. Originally a member of Houston Angels now playing for DFW Elite-Washington 2012. Sophomore at Clear Springs high school and top scorer for Coach Pam Crawford and the Chargers averaging 15 points per game.

Yates Lions Represent Houston in a BIG WAY!

Yates High School outscored its opponents by an amazing 96.5 to 50.9 points a game en route to a 34-1 record and to the 2009 Texas University Interscholastic League Conference 4A state title. Six-foot-two junior guard Joseph Young, who was named Conference 4A championship game MVP, set the pace with a 19.4 ppg scoring average. Classmates Brandon Peters (6-2) averaged 18.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 6.2 steals and Darius Gardner (5-10) averaged 12.2 points, 7.2 steals and 6.8 rebounds. With 6-0 point guard Marshall Lange and 6-9 center Alexander Davis also coming back for their senior campaigns, the entire starting unit returns intact for 2009-10, along with 11 of 15 players from last year’s state championship team. Fast Forward 2014

2009 Houston Hoops Holiday Classic showcased girls of Year 2014. Houston will be loaded with great players starting with a possible number “1” recruit Brianna Turner (Houston Heat-DFW Elite), daughter and only child of both great basketball athletes Howard & Kellye Turner. Brianna now 8th grader at Nolan Ryan Junior High is making a lot of noise nationally. She’s long and athletic which are definite attributes from her parents. Worked and trained with Ganon Baker this past summer in Atlanta and was rated by ESPN Hoopgurlz and ASGR as one of the 2014 Top 10 players.

The future is bright for the youngster of 2014 and with the way girls’ basketball is shaping up in the city she will definitely be an asset for any high school team. Only time will tell of how good of a player she will become. I wish Brianna the best and admire the Turner’s continued support to their daughters’ success.

ON THE RIGHT PATH

The Village School Lady Vikings junior high get a scare from HCYA, but pull it through by 2 points and taking three tournament awards home. Claiming its 2009 1st place trophy for the Houston Christian School Junior High Shoot Out. Lexie Onigbanjo got the MVP award while Hannah Cambel took the All-Tournament Player award. Coach Margo Graham was very pleased with the effort of her team. Everyone contributed and played well including her two very young 7th graders Maia Chargois and Sophie Milich. It’s early in the season for the Lady Vikings with a current record of 9-0 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Westside Home of the Wolves

Westside High School the home of where elite guards like Sydney Colson of Texas A&M had risen, now another skilled point guard name Tiffany Davis is making noise around the city. Daughter of former Houston Rockets point guard Emmanuel Davis is making a name for herself in the high school girl’s basketball arena. First time I saw Tiffany was back in 2006 playing for the Sure Shots AAU team competing in a tournament at the Ripley House near Houston ship channel. I remember her dribbling and driving down the middle lane confidently and was one of the girls in her team that gave Team NCI Elite a run for their money. Being coached and taught by her dad who played professionally is a great advantage for Tiffany.

Though, 2012 will be another year for Houston’s girls basketball triumph with girls that will populate college basketball arenas. It includes not only guards like Courtney Williams of North Shore, Jazmyn Guerrero of Dobbie high school, Raven Burns who teams up with Bianca Winslow daughter of former UH Phi Slamma Jamma Rickie Winslow at Bellaire high school, but we also have post players at Hightower high school, the T2 twin towers Tyler and Taylor Gilbert. Another 2012 guard is Sylvana Okde for Dulles where Kelsey Bone was a household name in 2008. More to come…

VIKINGS DYNAMIC DUO

Sophomores Trey Williams and Gary Smith are two of the rising guards in the city. They are The Village High School deadly backcourt combination. Smith and Williams can shoot the long threes, can penetrate, and dishes the ball and shoot mid range jump shots. Adding a post like Shaquille in the middle makes it a lot more difficult to defend the Vikings offense. Having only sophomores and freshmen makes them one of the youngest team in the city. The Village High School already showing maturity this season will be turning some heads in the next few years and with some of the freshmen addition, the Vikings will truly go farther next season. So if you are looking for some good basketball to watch, just come and see The Village High School Vikings basketball games.

These young guards and of course the rest of the Vikings team have already been getting some good looks and attention from colleges and universities around the nation.

From Basketball to Volleyball

Clarissa Moore is a household name in high school basketball at Eisenhower last year is now making some great noise in volleyball at the college level. A classy young lady whom I met in a basketball gym a couple of years ago playing AAU basketball. Clarissa Moore Receives Third Straight SWAC Newcomer Honors

SWAC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 1); Auburn Invitational All-Tournament; SWAC Newcomer of the Week (Sept. 21, Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, Nov. 9); SWAC Freshman of the Year; All-SWAC First Team; SWAC All-Tournament team Clarissa Moore compiled 25 kills, 12 digs, and five blocks as her Bulldogs registered two divisional wins last week over Jackson State and Alabama State. This is Moore’s fifth Newcomer of the Week honor this season and third consecutive week. A&M continues to ride a nine game win streak.
